The integration of qualitative and quantitative methods in mixed and multi-method (MMMR) designs promises to overcome several limitations of traditional mono-method approaches. Thus, MMMR may serve to corroborate social research results or broaden the empirical perspective on a given phenomenon. Thereby it may also help to shed light on the blind spots of mono-method approaches.
Yet method integration also poses specific challenges in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of empirical data.
This Session invites papers on the possibilities of MMMR for overcoming the limits of mono- method research as well as on the limitations and issues within the diverse and emerging field of method integration. Papers should discuss specific methodic or methodological problems with regard to concrete empirical MMMR projects in one of the following areas: sampling and data collection, analysis and interpretation, quality criteria and validation, methodological and epistemological foundations.
